A 2024 study on cognition published in Societies (MDPI journal) examined AI usage, cognitive offloading, and critical thinking skills in 666 individuals across diverse age groups and educational backgrounds. It found a significant negative correlation between heavy AI-tool use and critical thinking performance, mediated by cognitive offloading (i.e. offloading mental tasks to AI).

 

The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between frequent AI tool usage and critical thinking abilities, mediated by increased cognitive offloading. Younger participants exhibited higher dependence on AI tools and lower essential thinking scores than older participants.

 

Also, a 2025 study by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon tracked 319 knowledge workers across 936 everyday tasks. The findings revealed a troubling trend. The more they relied on AI, the less they engaged in critical thinking. As dependence on automated tools increased, their analytical effort steadily declined.

2, Cross-examine every AI draft: Treat the output like a junior analyst’s first cut: ask what data is missing, where the logic bends, and which assumption would sink the recommendation.

 

3, Keep a blind-spot ledger: Take cognisance of every task you reflex-prompt. Those are the muscles you’re letting waste away, eroding the very instincts you’re meant to sharpen over time. Sketch the messy draft. Wrestle with the outline.

Then, bring in AI, not as a crutch but as a mirror, a tool to refine, not replace.
